OUR PROGRAMS
Inmates have access to over 70 programs.
& Program Participation
Programs are classified into three categories. :
-
Mission Critical - Courses that directly impact at least one facet of CRI's mission statement; creating a new way of life , developing pro-social skills, eliminating the prison culture, or enhancing positive character traits.
-
Mission Supportive - These courses are important components of the character initiative. They do not directly address the stated mission, but they do provide additional essential skills to the participants. Many of the courses are vocational in nature, providing real world skills that participants can apply in order to be self-supportive immediately upon re-entry into society.
-
Elective - Courses that allow participants to use their free time constructively, pursue their personal interests, and develop their creative skills. These courses do not satisfy the attendance requirements of the participants' persona; progression plans.
There is no state funding for the programs we run. All Programs rely on the support of volunteers and funding from grants and donations.

Participation in Programs is tracked in a database developed by men at Allendale, and designed to be used at all prisons in the state for this purpose. As well as Program activity, the database logs "engagements" - occasions where a man records a commendation for another's actions, or where another inmate is challenged for behavior that is at odds with the Social Contract. Character Restoration relies on peer to peer responsibility

"The men in our journalism class are like sponges, eager to soak up knowledge of the many aspects of the field we can share with them. Volunteering at Allendale has been a privilege and joy for me. Moreover, it has become my passion to help them they can have real opportunities as writers, editors and photographers when they are released"
Lynne Hummell, Volunteer in the Journalism Program
